The Idea Behind UseBB
In 2002, being a forum software enthusiastic, I (Dietrich) wrote a small personal forum script called "SBBS" (Small Bulletin Board System). It was mostly built out of PHP practice and was never really redistributed or supported. In 2003, I decided to start an Open Source project to continue the development of this concept of a small forum system. Eventually, the system was rewritten from scratch and more functionality was being added. The first version was released in February 2004. In the subsequent years, UseBB has been constantly under development, sometimes a bit slower, but reaching 1.0 in 2006. Until today, the 1.0 branch is still supported and bugfix releases are released from time to time.
Future perspective
As UseBB 1 proved unsufficient for future development and needs, it is in the process of being replaced by UseBB 2. This second version is an entire rewrite in object-oriented PHP 5 with special attention to extensibility and integration. UseBB 2 also includes a total relaunch of the project with a new website. Currently, v2 is under development and its code is available in Subversion.
