the project we're doing is an student information system where students have already have an username and password and registration is no longer needed.

how can remove the registration and instead use a given database to access the forum?

You can disable registration in the ACP, and then remove the link in the top bar from the default template.

Using a different user database is not supported and thus needs to be coded yourself.
