I've been busy the last few days in making the default template look better, especially the topic view. This is what I have for the moment:

Things that have changed are: the background color and border, the position of the location bar (now before the quick reply box), the table rows containing the posts that don't have the inner vertical border anymore, the spacing between the rank and avatar, the post count, the topic title above the post and the buttons (made by Jemo).

Any suggestions are welcome. Note you can't find this newly layout yet in downloads nor in CVS.

I think you should do the button_text in yellow to, the scrollbar is pretty funny. Nice!

I also added the registration date in "M y" format below the post count.

I'm going to place the new topic and reply buttons out of the table.

Now it looks a bit messy with all those table cells that are sometimes even empty.

In my opinion, theres not enough which seperates the topic text from the author information. Seems sort of jumbled together. Perhaps different background colors or borders would help?

Different background color would help, but it would'n fit with the current switching of background color per post. Or I should make the user information in the "dark" grey and the post itself in the lighter one.

After all, you can simply adjust any template for this.
